Highlights

The NUS ECE Graduate Students Council successfully hosted yet another tea session, which took place on Tuesday, 20th December 2011 at the Department’s Hibiscus lounge around 3:00PM. This was the fourth tea session that has been organized so far by GSC, aimed at informally bringing together graduate students and faculty members to address some of the concerns of graduate students and to make joint efforts, at the same time, in creating a much more conducive environment for quality research work. This time, Associate Professor John TL Thong graced the occasion with his presence.

The event started off with a welcoming speech by Li Yongfu (President 2nd Executive Committee of GSC) in which he introduced the 2nd Executive Committee, a brief overview of what GSC has been doing in the past and the upcoming society events, particularly the Symposium, which will take place next year in May. Professor Thong also emphasized on the importance of such tea sessions, stating that such informal interactions between research students help to generate more bright and innovative ideas for future research. The introductory formalities were being followed by a general discussion session. A key concern which was highlighted here was the possibility of allowing and funding the more able research students to attend some of the international conferences by slightly altering the distribution of research grants available to the Department. Professor Thong assured that this matter will be given due consideration in coming staff meetings.

The intense discussions were followed by light refreshments. The GSC members expressed their thanks and gratitude to the participants and asked them for their feedback on the usefulness of these tea sessions and their suggestions to help improve in coming years. In a nutshell, the event was a great success and GSC looks forward to organizing its next tea session in January.
