Dear Engineering Students,
Please be informed that OPAS (https://myaces.nus.edu.sg/VOPSEP/Login) will open for Round 2 SEP applications AY
2016/17 from 20 January to 1 February
2016 (2359hrs). Eligible students (http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/eligibility.htm)
may log in during that period to apply for SEP AY16/17.
Please note that for this round, students are able to apply only for Semester
2 places.
You will be able to view the full list of universities that are available to
you in OPAS upon logging in. Places that are not on the list means that they
are unavailable. Attached are the number of vacancies available for each
university.
Please take time to read the comments under IRO
remarks for students. This will tell you any important information you will
need to know; eg. if the University offers your department major modules, if
there are certain pre requisites or if exchange students are able to take
certain modules in the university.
Please note that University of Cambridge and Oxford
University are not open for applications unless you have been invited to apply.
Students who have already accepted an offer in round 1 will not be able to
re-apply in round 2. Students who have rejected an offer in round 1 can apply
only in Round 3. Students who have applied in round 1 but were unsuccessful can
re-apply in round 2 by updating his/her application in OPAS.
Please check on the following before choosing a university (you have up to 5
choices):
1. Whether the partner University has suitable courses for you. Eg, if you are
an ME student, do not choose a university that does not have an ME equivalent
department. Do note that faculties/departments at other universities might not
have the exact same names at those at NUS.
2. Whether the partner University's academic calendar for the semester of your
choice is suitable for you.
3. Whether you will face any problems with the language of instruction.
4. Whether you will be able to comfortably finance your SEP stint.
Please note that it is still mandatory to ensure
that at least three of your choices are partner universities from three
different continents, unless you are a LPP/LIA student. A failure to ensure
such may result in lower priority for application.
Links to information on our partners can be found at http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/universities.htm. If
you wish to contact students who have been to a particular university that you
wish to consider, please request that information from myself or through your
department.
Please take the time to read through our SEP website at http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/ for
more information on SEP before submitting an application.
All the best! Thank you.

Subject: RE: Student Exchange Programme (SEP) Application AY16/17 Round
1 (21 September - 16 October 2015 )
Importance: High
Dear Engineering Students,
Please be informed that OPAS is now open for Round
1 SEP applications AY2016/17.
Eligible students may log into OPAS from 21 September – 16 October 2015 (2359hrs) to apply for SEP AY16/17 (semester 1 / semester 2
/ full year). Before applying via OPAS, please visit “http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/eligibility.htm” for information about your eligibility and https://myaces.nus.edu.sg/VOPSEP/Login for application on OPAS.
*Note: Students applying for Semester 1 and Full Year
exchanges can apply only in Round 1.
As
COMPULSORY IA will be in your third OR FOURTH year of studies (DEPENDING ON
YOUR PROGRAMME), please CHECK WITH YOUR DEPARTMENT to select partner
universities (PU) whose academic calendar DOES NOT CLASH with your IA period.
Upon logging into OPAS, students will be able to view the overseas partner
universities that have available places. If a university is not on the list,
places are not available at the university in the current academic year. For
more information on partner universities and their timelines, you may visit http://nus.edu.sg/iro/sep/partners/pu/index.html.
Before indicating your
choice of up to FIVE (5) universities via OPAS, please ensure that:
·
you have gone through
our SEP website at http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/
for more information on SEP.
·
the partner
universities of your choices have an identical/similar course/discipline as
yours e.g. Mechanical Engineering (ME) students should avoid universities
without ME-related disciplines. However, please note that
faculties/departments at some universities may not have identical names as
those here in NUS. (Eg. Technical University of Eindhoven does not offer
courses in Bioengineering & Chemical Engineering).
·
the partner
University's academic calendar is suitable for you.
·
at least three of
your choices are partner universities from three different continents.
·
you will have no
problems related to the language of instruction at the partner University.
·
you have sufficient
funds to support your SEP at the partner University. Students will pay NUS
tuition fees for the regular semesters while on exchange and will be fully
responsible for their own airfare, visa, accommodation, living and other
expenses. (e.g. estimated costs of at least S$10,000 for students going on
exchange to North America, Europe, Australia, & UK.)
Many in the past who made few choices or mainly chose
popular universities, had difficulties obtaining a suitable placement. You are
advised to prepare an initial study plan for each SEP partner
university (http://www.eng.nus.edu.sg/sep/mapping.htm)
being applied to which need to produced when shortlisted for an interview
by your respective departments subject in satisfying the above criteria (otherwise
application will be treated as incomplete & not processed). You
may refer to a list of past mappings by your seniors. Please approach your
department for this.
Attached is a list of universities that are available
to Engineering Students. Please note that places may be subject to changes. A
general FAQ guide is also attached for your information read. Please read it
thoroughly.
The
timeline for AY16/17 SEP is outlined below:
Round 1 (applications
for Sem 1, 2 and full year) :
End September / Early October
Round 2 (applications for
Sem 2 only) :
Mid-January
Round 3: Early April
Students are to be prepared for interviews in Round 1 & 2.
Students will be assessed holistically (50% CAP
& 50% Interview rating) during the allocation process; and not just
based on academic standing but also on the following:
·
motivations for pursuing the SEP.
·
ability to be good “ambassadors”
of NUS & Singapore.
·
ability to communicate & articulate ideas effectively; good performance in ES1531, ES2331 and/or
ES1501X is an indicator of ability of students to communicate well and so
it is an important factor in the SEP selection process.
·
exhibit interests
& abilities beyond academics that are evident through
their active involvement in various special programs in the last 1 to 2 years (e.g. FoE Enhancement
Programs / clubs / societies / sports: in
the University and/or general community.)
Please carefully complete the “Motivation”
section of your application in OPAS to accurately highlight the above qualities
and be prepared to attend interviews. Students are expected to be able
to produce evidence of any factual information they provide in their
application/present at interviews; any attempt to provide false information or
plagiarism could result in disqualification from the SEP and/or disciplinary
action.
You
will be notified through email about the results of your application in DECEMBER 2015. Please keep a look out for your emails, especially if you
will be overseas during that period. Students will have to log in to
OPAS to accept/reject the offer. Students who reject an offer may be barred
for applying again for another SEP partner university in the subsequent
round of application. You can also check on your status by logging into
OPAS.
*NOTE: Withdrawals are taken very seriously as students
who withdraw would have deprived other students who could have gone in their
place. A penalty of at least S$300 (up to $500) would be imposed for
students who withdraw after accepting the internal offer in OPAS, Also,
withdrawal without valid reasons will result in a lower priority or
disqualification from application for other programs in the future.
NUS has various financial assistance schemes in place to assist
eligible students in funding their approved overseas educational programmes. We
encourage you to tap onto these sources found below:
You
may also refer to the International Relations website http://nus.edu.sg/iro/sep/out/index.html to find out more about your exchange.
If you are a GEP or Polytechnic direct-entry student
(in your second year) and will like to spend a semester at an overseas partner
university under the Student Exchange Programme (SEP) in AY2016/17, you may
also proceed to apply in Round 1 SEP applications AY2016/17 via OPAS.
If you are a Year 3 DDP student who will not be
graduating in AY2016 and will like to go for the SEP in AY2016/17, please seek
the approval of your department SEP coordinator who will assess if you will be
able to map a sufficient number of modules and also not delay your graduation.
As a DDP student, if you will like to do an exchange through the Faculty of
Engineering, please ensure that you choose about 75-80 percent of your overseas
modules in Engineering.
**Note:
Students are not eligible to go for SEP in their final year of study.
Thank you for your attention and all the best for your
SEP applications!
