Professor Ashraf A. Kassim obtained his Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honors and Master of Engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering from NUS, and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining NUS, Ashraf was involved in machine vision research at Texas Instruments. Currently, the Vice Provost (Special Duties) at the National University of Singapore, Ashraf has been actively involved in research and teaching while holding various administrative positions including the Assistant Director, Higher Education(Universities) at the Ministry of Education (1999 to 2000), Deputy Head of ECE Department overseeing Academic matters (2001 to 2004), Vice-Dean (Undergraduate Programmes) of the Faculty of Engineering (2005 to 2014) and Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) of NUS (2014 to 2016). Ashraf received various teaching awards over the years including the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award. His main research interests are in the areas of computer vision, medical imaging, image processing and machine learning. He has published a book, several book chapters and over 170 technical journal and conference publications. Ashraf has been involved in the programme and organizing committees of a number of international conferences, and is also on the editorial boards of several leading journals.
