The Fifth National University Student Contest of Creativity-in-Action - 2nd Prize Winners

EE4 student Pan Jiun Horng, Ruth and CPE4 student Chan Ting Ting have been working on their final year projects in the Human Interface Technology lab under the supervision of Dr Adrian Cheok. They developed (over a period of two semesters) a total of 3 interfaces using games, tangible interfaces and cubes as their main focus. This includes the AR Magic Story Cube, AR Interior Design and Jumanji Singapore

Both AR Magic Story Cube and Jumanji Singapore won many accolades. AR Magic Story Cube which combines the idea of augmented reality and a foldable story cube received much publicity in the ‘New Scientist’ Magazine and a German Newspaper ‘Spiegel Online’. Jumanji Singapore and AR Magic Story Cube have also been accepted as a Journal publication in Interactive Entertainment 2004 and have much media attention from the Canadian Online TV.

Both applications cast the computers into the background and allow the user to interact naturally and intuitively without much physical constraints. In addition, much effort had been put in to create interesting 3D models making the applications aesthetically pleasing and visual and audio hints to increase intuitiveness. This makes both applications suitable for "The Fifth National University Student Contest of Creativity-in-Action" which had “Family and Home” for its theme this year.

Both Ting Ting and Ruth represented Singapore in "Creativity-in-Action: Asian University Tour" category of "The Fifth National University Student Contest of Creativity-in-Action" held in Taipei on 15th May 2004 . This is a prestigious contest in Taiwan which was held annually. The event on Saturday was attended by Taiwan's National Science Council Minister Che-Ho Wei, Minister of Education Jong-Tsun Huang and President of National Taiwan University Wei-Jao Chen.
