About the ECE Safety & Health Committee
The Workplace Safety
and Health Act (WSHA) came in effect on 1 March
2006. The Act requires stakeholders to take
reasonably practicable measures to ensure the
safety and health of all workers in the
workplace and other people that are affected by
the work being carried out.

In line with the
WSHA Act, the ECE Safety Committee is committed
to promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy
working and studying environment for all staff,
students and visitors in the department.
Fulfilling this commitment is no small task due
to diversified nature of activities and work
being carried out in the ECE department. It
requires close guidance from the management team
and strong support and active participation from
every staff and student working and studying in
this department.
The current Committee comprises of Deputy Head
(Admin) as an adviser, Chairman, Safety
Consultant, Departmental Safety Co-ordinators,
Fire Safety Co-ordinators, Chief First-Aider,
Acting License Holder for hazardous substances,
and Collator for Laser Licenses. Working closely
with OSHE (NUS Office of Safety, Health &
Environment) and Faculty Safety Unit, the
Committee is tasked to oversee that all safety
management systems and procedures are in place,
and rules and regulations are complied. To
achieve this goal, the Committee conducts
monthly safety inspection of selected
laboratories and discusses the findings
immediately after the inspection in every
monthly Safety and Health committee meeting. The
Committee will give reasonably practicable
recommendations to address and eventually
resolve all issues related to safety, health and
environment surfaced during each inspection. In
addition to regular monthly activities, the
Committee, under the guidance of the Faculty
Safety Unit, also takes responsibilities in
coordinating annual safety compliance audits,
certification audits, internal audits, Safety
Management System (SMS) training and corrective
verifications. The Committee has gained
recognition for its efforts through receiving
various awards such as ASPHA (NUS Annual Safety
& Health Performance Award) and SHIP (NUS Safety
& Health Improvement Projects Scheme, organised
by OSHE.
The Committee is pleased to see the rapidly
increasing awareness of workplace safety and
heath in our department in recent years. We look
forward to your continuing efforts to make ECE
department a safe place to work and study.
