The Asian Control Conference (ASCC) is a biennial event and a major international
control systems event held in Asia. The history of ASCC dates back to 1994 when
the first ASCC was held in Tokyo. The subsequent conferences then were held in
Seoul (1997), Shanghai (2000), Singapore (2002), Melbourne (2004), Bali (2006), and
Hong Kong (2009). All of them had several hundreds of participants coming from
around the world. The 2009 ASCC Best Application Paper Award winning work on the
design and implementation of a robust automatic flight control system for a small-scale
UAV helicopter, by Guowei Cai, Ben M. Chen & Tong H. Lee, features the successful
utilization of advanced modeling and control techniques to a real UAV platform, which
has achieved a top level performance in accordance with the military standard set by
the US Army Aviation for military rotorcraft. The work is part of the research activities
conducted by the UAV Research team in the Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, National University of Singapore. The team has currently expanded its
research horizon in the directions related to the cooperative control and coordination
of multiple UAVs, and vision-based indoor and urban navigation. This 2009 Best
Application Paper Award carries a prize of USD500 and certificates for each author.
The 7th ASCC was held 27 - 29 August 2009, in Hong Kong.

Lian Yong Appointed Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transcations on Circuits and Systems II for a two-
year term starting from 1 Jan 2010. This is the first time in the transaction's 57 years
history that someone in Asia has been given this prestigious position.
Aaron Danner His work on "Photorealistic Rendering of Metamaterials Devices" with his collaborator
(Prof Ulf Leonhardt of St. Andrews University, Scotland, UK) has gained international
visibility. Metamaterials can be used to design devices that have very unique
properties, such as invisibility cloaks, universal mirrors, perfect lenses, or devices that
bend light in ways that are impossible with ordinary materials. His research is related
to photorealistically depicting such devices in action in order to study their
performance, to "experience the devices" as they would actually appear if built, and to
study the construction of such materials.

The work was reported in the following online media in July 2009 :

In addition, a CBS news reporter will conduct a personal interview with Dr Danner in
Aug 2009.
