The joint team with Carnegie Mellon University and IBM T.J Watson achieved 1st place in 4 out of 7 retrospective event detection tasks.

The top performance entry is titled as "CMU-IBM-NUS@TRECVID 2012: Surveillance Event Detection (SED) ".

TRECVID is the flagship annual competition in multimedia area.

Venkatesan Thirumalai Venky

2012 George E. Pake Prize, American Physical Society (APS), 17 Oct 2011, USA.

Prof Venkatesan is honored for his exemplary scientific career in research, industrial leadership, and guidance of new generations of physicists in the creation of new ventures by innovation. He has outstanding work in the invention of pulsed laser deposition process, development in the field of oxide electronics, successful conversion of academic research into commercializable products, and having more than 10 students and researchers setup commercial enterprises. He is the first Asian outside USA to be awarded, and is also one of the most highly cited physicists in the world today, being ranked 66 globally (as at end of year 2000).

This annual award (established since 1984 and sponsored by Xerox Corporation) is in recognition and encouragement to physicists internationally for their outstanding work combining original research accomplishments with leadership in the management of research or development in industry.

The prize consists of US $5,000, a certificate and a travel allowance to 2012 APS meeting / award ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts, 27 Feb – 2 Mar 2012.

Prof Venkatesan’s achievement will also be featured in Knowledge Enterprise and NUS Buzz, in Jan 2012 and March 2012 issues respectively.

Winner (Object Classification Challenge) and Honorable Mention Prize (Object Detection Challenge), Pascal Visual Object Classes Challenge (VOC), 11 Sep 2010, Crete, Greece. The prize comprises t-shirts and certificates.

The team clinched the top place in the Object Classification Challenge for 12 out of 20 object classes from a total of 22 international teams. For the Object Detection Challenge, there were 15 teams worldwide.

PASCAL VOC is a benchmark in visual object category recognition and detection, providing the vision and machine learning communities with a standard dataset of images, annotation and standard evaluation procedures. Organized annually from year 2005 to present, the challenge and its associated dataset have become accepted as the benchmark for object detection. More importantly, VOC has been flag of the state-of-the-art algorithms for object classification, detection, and segmentation. Almost all the top universities in the world (eg. MIT, UIUC, CMU, Berkeley) and some well-known companies (eg. NEC) have participated in this competition.

IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Fellow 2010, 27 Sep 2010, Laxenburg, Austria.

Honored for his fundamental contributions to adaptive neural network applications in robotics. The fellowship is given to individuals who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions in the field of interest of IFAC, in the role as an engineer, scientist, technical leader or educator. The first fellows were elected in the IFAC World Congress in Prague in July 2005.

1st Prize (Information and Communication Technologies Track), "Innovation Circus", Milan, Italy, 22 April 2010.

The winning entry is A/Prof Adrian team's "Petimo" project (a social networking robot for children).

The international competition is a six-day showcase on innovation and research hosted by the city of Milan. The prize is termed "InventiON: Competition of ideas for inventors". The prize facilitates the professional business and technical evaluation of the invention, and provides related support in the preparation of the business plan, with potential of product commercialization.

The competition is sponsored by the Municipality of Milan and the Chamber of Commerce, and is co-organized by service company Alintec, together with "Nova-Sole 24 ore" (Italian financial times). The main sponsor of the competition is 3M.

1st Prize, 2009 International Digital Signal Processing Creative Design Contest, 19 Nov 2009, Tainan, Taiwan.

The contest was sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan and the IEEE chapter on Signal Processing. A nationwide domestic contest was held in Taiwan in preliminary competitions and 12 Taiwanese teams were selected out of about 100 for the final along with 8 international teams from overseas universities. There were 20 teams in the final.

The winning work is on "Automated Ex-Utero Harvesting of Stem Cells from Placenta". The award comprises of a trophy and NT $30,000.

Best Poster Paper Prize at the 16th IEEE International Symposium on Physical and Failure Analysis of Integrated Circuits (IPFA 2009), 6-10 July 09, Suzhou, China.

IPFA 2009 is devoted to the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms of semiconductor device failures and issues related to semiconductor device reliability and yield, especially those related to advanced process technologies.The winning paper is titled "Advanced Dynamic Failure Analysis on Interconnects by Vectorized Scanning Joule Expansion Microscopy". The paper is a result of the research collaboration between Wuppertal University, Germany, and NUS.

2009 Asian Control Conference (ASCC) Best Application Paper Award, 7th ASCC, 27 – 29 Aug 2009, Hong Kong.

The winning paper is entitled “Design and implementation of a robust automatic flight control system for a small-scale UAV helicopter”. The prize carries USD 500 and certificates for each author.

The Asian Control Conference (ASCC) is a biennial event and a major international control systems event held in Asia. The history of ASCC dates back to 1994 when the first ASCC was held in Tokyo. The subsequent conferences then were held in Seoul (1997), Shanghai (2000), Singapore (2002), Melbourne (2004), Bali (2006), and Hong Kong (2009). All of them had several hundreds of participants coming from around the world. The winning work features the successful utilization of advanced modeling and control techniques to a real UAV platform, which has achieved a top level performance in accordance with the military standard set by the US Army Aviation for military rotorcraft. The work is part of the research activities conducted by the UAV Research team in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore. The team has currently expanded its research horizon in the directions related to the cooperative control and coordination of multiple UAVs, and vision-based indoor and urban navigation.

The winning paper is titled "Automated Haematopoletic Stem Cells Harvesting Machine". There were more than 2000 delegates in this conference, & the team clinched this prestigious top award.

Aaron Danner,

His work on "Photorealistic Rendering of Metamaterials Devices" with his collaborator (Prof Ulf Leonhardt of St. Andrews University, Scotland, UK) has gained international visibility. Metamaterials can be used to design devices that have very unique properties, such as invisibility cloaks, universal mirrors, perfect lenses, or devices that bend light in ways that are impossible with ordinary materials. His research is related to photorealistically depicting such devices in action in order to study their performance, to "experience the devices" as they would actually appear if built, and to study the construction of such materials.

The team comprises Dr Yeo Yee Chia and team comprising Dr Ang Kah Wee (PhD graduate, NUS Graduate School), Mr Lin Jianqiang (previously UROP Student), Mr Tung Chih-Hang (previously Member of Technical Team, IME), Dr Narayanan Balasubramaniam (previously Manager, IME), and Assoc Prof Samudra Ganesh Shankar (Collaborator).

This prestigious award was established in 1984 to honor the author(s) of the best paper that appeared in an IEEE EDS publication in the preceding calendar year. It is presented annually and the recipient(s) is awarded a certificate and a cheque for $2,500. IEEE EDS consistently publishes top tier journals. In year 2008, it published more than 400 papers in the IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, and more than 300 papers in the IEEE Electron Device Letters. The winning paper from NUS is titled "Strained n-MOSFET With Embedded Source/Drain Stressors and Strain-Transfer Structure (STS) for Enhanced Transistor Performance" published in the March 2008 issue of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices. It is the 2nd time Dr Yeo is receiving this award. He first received it in 2002 for a paper he wrote as a PhD student.

Charanjit Singh Bhatia

2008 Information Storage Industry Consortium (INSIC) Distinguished Contribution Award. The award was given at the 2008 INSIC Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, USA on 13 Aug 2008.

Prof Bhatia was awarded in recognition of his dedicated, long-term leadership and outstanding level of contribution to tribology and head-disk interface research for the INSIC EHDR (Extremely High Density Recording) Research Program in advanced hard disk storage technology. Prof Bhatia is the only individual to have twice been awarded the INSIC Leadership Award (in 1998 & 2003), and he was honored for nearly a decade and a half of leadership in tribology research, for his recent efforts in leading a working group to define approaches to the head-disk interface for 10 terabit per square inch recording, and for his pioneering efforts to include the entire nation of Singapore (through the involvement of the Data Storage Institute, the National University of Singapore &, most recently, the Institute for Materials Research & Engineering) in INSIC's research programs.
