The National University of Singapore's mission is to "advance knowledge and foster innovation, educate students and nurture talent in service of country and society". The mission of the Faculty of Engineering is "to nurture engineer-leaders with a global outlook and to provide technological leadership through high-impact research". In line with these missions, the ECE Department's BEng(Electrical Engineering) programme:
"aim to produce electrical engineers with a strong foundation in the relevant sciences and technology, who are able to contribute to society through innovation, enterprise and leadership"
The BEng(Electrical Engineering) programme strives to achieve these aims through a set of programme objectives as follows :
Objective 1: | To develop knowledge and skills required for a career in Electrical Engineering
Objective 2: | To develop an understanding of and an ability to apply basic sciences, mathematics and electrical and information sciences to the practice of Electrical Engineering
Objective 3: | To provide an environment that prepares students for diverse careers and lifelong learning
Objective 4: | To enable students to understand the interactions of Electrical Engineering with the society, business, technical, and environmental spheres
Objective 5: | To enable students to contribute to national development and global economy
The success of the programmes is assessed through the following learning outcomes:
Outcome 1: | General Education: Intellectual broadening through exposure to information, knowledge and modes of inquiry that are beyond the engineering discipline
Outcome 2: | Core: Understanding of and ability to apply the basic science, the mathematics and the basic electrical engineering knowledge
Outcome 3: | Technical Breadth: Knowledge in technical areas relevant to Electrical Engineering, and abilities to use techniques, skills and engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
Outcome 4: | Technical Depth: An understanding of, and an ability to solve engineering problems in one or more specializations of Electrical Engineering
Outcome 5: | Design: An ability to perform engineering design by the process of analysis, synthesis and integration of knowledge within Electrical Engineering
Outcome 6: | Attitude: Inculcate a need for lifelong learning
Outcome 7: | Communications: An ability to communicate effectively by reading, writing, listening and speaking
Outcome 8: | Professional Relations: An ability to work effectively in teams
Outcome 9: | Ethics: Be able to appreciate the importance of ethics in engineering practice and to understand the impact of engineering on society
The programme comprises of four components - a strong core in basic sciences, computing and engineering; technical competence through a minimum of breadth & depth modules; a general education; and an enhancement programme. The core provides knowledge and skills essential for electrical engineers. These include group projects, a technology assessment project and individual research and design projects. A minimum number of breadth modules ensure that each student is exposed to most aspects of the state-of art ECE areas. In addition students can achieve depth in area(s) of their choice. General education modules complement the technical education through a wide array of modules in humanities, social sciences, philosophy and professionalism to make our graduates educated members of the global community.
Students are offered a creative learning environment through activities like independent study modules, research internships, technopreneurship and student exchange programmes. They help students to achieve skills for life long-learning and prepare them for the work place of the future.
