Protection and Commercialisation of Intellectual Property

Abstract

This talk intends to introduce undergraduate students to the subject of Intellectual Property, and to provide some insights into identifying, and protecting IP generated in the course of study. Students will find this talk useful in helping them to understand the fundamentals of IP law, and the various forms of IP protection. Furthermore, they will also have a better knowledge of the IP support & provisions at NUS that will help them when have a great idea to protect or when they embark on their industrial attachment and final year projects.

IP is becoming more and more recognized as a valuable asset and growth strategy for business. Students may embark on business ventures with IP they created or licensed from NUS and this talk will also covers some of the support NUS has for licensing and student start-up business ventures.

Biography

Dr Kew is the Head of the Intellectual Property Mgt (specializing in patent management, technology licensing, and contract negotiations) of INTRO at NUS. He received his B.Sc(Hons) Degree and Ph.D. from Aberdeen University, Scotland, U.K. in Electrical Engineering. He serves as an advisor to faculty members and students on Intellectual Property matters and regularly conducts lectures to undergraduate students on Intellectual Property and patent protection. He is actively involved in the promotion of entrepreneurship at NUS. He has advised many NUS spin-off companies and is instrumental in the setting up of a student business incubator at Eusoff Hall in NUS. He currently holds the position of Director-Designate of Eusoff Business Incubator which is an affiliate to NUS Business Incubator.
