Engineers in the World of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology Research

Date : 28 January 2008 (Monday)

Time : 1 to 2 pm

Venue : LT 2

Speaker : Lee Yong Yeow, A*STAR scholar, Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology

Synopsis:

Like the saying goes: “No man is an island”. Today’s advancement and breakthrough in science and technology is driven by synergies of chemistry, biology, physics and engineering. This seminar will present some interesting biomedical technologies developed in the recent years, highlighting the importance of developing applications from an integrated science approach.

In aspects of career development, continual training and education is essential for one to progress and grow. The research career in bioengineering and nanotechnology allows one to build and develop expertise, creating both knowledge and technology for the betterment of society.

Biography:

Lee Yong Yeow is an A*STAR scholar, currently pursuing PhD in NUS Graduate School and the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN).

Yong Yeow started out developing interest in research through a half year internship program in 2003. He extended his internship for his final year project work on developing cancer diagnostic kit for breast cancer. This work won the gold award for best presenting project in NTU College of Engineering Week 2004.

After graduating from NTU, EEE in 2004, Yong Yeow continues to develop his interest bridging biology and engineering. In 2 years, Yong Yeow and a team of scientists in IBN, developed the DropArray technology that allow convenient miniaturization of bioassays. With this technology, the team wrote a business plan that translates science to business, winning first prize in Start-up @ Singapore, the National Business Plan competition in 2007.
